WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE
From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge.

Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, a National Book Award finalist, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” (Los Angeles Times).

Now you can Enjoy book Society and Environment: A Historical Review (Studies in International Planning History) with detailed description:

Product Description

Jaqueline Tyrwhitt (1905-1983) was a British town planner, editor, and educator. This book includes four of Tyrwhitt’s key texts to illustrate how she forged and promoted a synthesis of Patrick Geddes’ bioregionalism and the utopian ideals of European Modernist urbanism, which influenced post-war academic discourse and professional practice in urban planning and design internationally.

The key texts reprinted in this book are contributions from the Town and Country Planning Textbook (1950) which was published as an outcome for the Correspondence Course in Town Planning for members of the Allied Forces, which Tyrwhitt ran. It was designed to meet the requirements created by passage of the 1947 Town and Country Act and helped to shape a generation of planning practitioners in the UK and commonwealth countries.

Best Studies in Architecture (Classic Reprint)

Product Description

The following Essays are connected rather by the method of treatment attempted than by subject. Architecture is a difficult art, and it is less popular in England than in other countries. The reason is, I believe, that writers have dealt with architecture either as an affair of dates and technicalities or as a vehicle for moral disquisition. The first method has little interest for the layman, and the latter none at all for the artist. The result has been that architecture, considered as an art, has dropped out of the main stream of educated thought, and has lost touch of that intelligent interest which is freely accorded to the sister arts. The problem for the critic is, I think, to find in architecture the personal equation of the architect, to read his personality in his works, and to find a clue to his works in his personality. After all, the vital interest of architecture is the human interest, not merely the reflection of social habit in buildings, but that play of personal temperament, which is as clearly traceable in the works of architects as it is in those of painters and sculptors. It is to this point that I have addressed myself in the following Essays.

Excerpt from Reason in Architecture: Lectures Delivered at the Royal Academy of Arts in the Year 1906

Part of the following chapters formed the substance of two lectures on Architecture given by invitation last year at the Royal Institution. Addressing a mixed audience I thought it a useful opportunity for presenting the subject under a different aspect from the usual one, and for showing that the purely archaeological side of Architecture which is generally studied cannot rightly be regarded as sufficient for the general public, and still less for practising Architects.

During the vacancy of the Professorial chair at the Royal Academy I was asked by the Council to undertake the lectures on Architecture this year; and I thought no treatment of the subject would be more useful than this, either to the students or to others who were present.

Product Description

This book is an illustrated version of the original Black Spirits and White by Ralph Adams Cram. “When in May, 1886, I found myself at last in Paris, I naturally determined to throw myself on the charity of an old chum of mine, Eugene Marie d'Ardeche, who had forsaken Boston a year or more ago on receiving word of the death of an aunt who had left him such property as she possessed. I fancy this windfall surprised him not a little, for the relations between the aunt and nephew had never been cordial, judging from Eugene's remarks touching the lady, who was, it seems, a more or less wicked and witch-like old person, with a penchant for black magic, at least such was the common report.”

Product Description

Morris-Jumel Mansion is an engaging look at the history of Manhattans oldest residence. Built by Roger Morris in 1765 as a summer estate, it has truly been a witness to history throughout the last 250 years. Located in the upper Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights, the mansion sits on a large hill, with sweeping views of both the East and Hudson Rivers. George Washington strategically located his headquarters here during the fall of 1776, but the Jumels, who made the house their home from 1810 to 1895, left the most indelible mark. In 1904, the residence became a museum, thanks to the Daughters of the American Revolution, who saved the house and allowed it to grow with the changing neighborhood. Today, this landmark is a symbol of both the long history of the city and the contemporary face of its now diverse neighborhood.

Certain clergymen and architects were recently invited to discuss the subject of American Catholic Architecture in the columns ofT he BrickbuilJ er, a magazine devoted to the advancement of brick architecture. Though naturally developing a wide variety of views and sentiments, the contributors were found to be notably in agreement in their dissatisfaction with prevailing standards of ecclesiastical art. The more lengthy of the two professional papers is now republished, in the belief that there are many outside the restricted constituency of the publication in which it appeared for whom such an essay may be of interest. The clerical contributors were Monsignor Lavalle, Rev. Dr. John Talbot Smith andR ev. James |. Flood, of New York, andR ev. Shift Clinic design to keep pace with the evolving healthcare industry

Modern Clinic Design: Strategies for an Era of Change is a comprehensive guide to optimizing patient experience through the design of the built environment. Written by a team of veteran healthcare interior designers, architects, and engineers, this book addresses the impacts of evolving legislation, changing technologies, and emerging nontraditional clinic models on clinic design, and illustrates effective design strategies for any type of clinic. Readers will find innovative ideas about lean design, design for flexibility, and the use of mock-ups to prototype space plans within a clinic setting, and diagrammed examples including waiting rooms, registration desks, and exam rooms that demonstrate how these ideas are applied to real-world projects.

Spurred on by recent healthcare legislation and new technological developments, clinics can now offer a greater variety of services in a greater variety of locations. Designers not only need to know the different requirements for each of these spaces, but also understand how certain design strategies affect the patient's experience in the space. This book explores all aspects of clinic design, and describes how aesthetics and functionality can merge to provide a positive experience for patients, staff, and healthcare providers.

  • Understand how recent industry developments impact facility design
  • Learn how design strategies can help create a positive patient experience
  • Examine emerging clinic models that are becoming increasingly prevalent
  • Analyze the impact of technology on clinic design

A well-designed clinic is essential for the well-being of the patients and health care providers that occupy the space every day. The healthcare industry is shifting, and the healthcare design industry must shift with it to continue producing spaces that are relevant to ever-evolving patient and worker needs. For complete guidance toward the role of design, Modern Clinic Design is a thorough, practical reference.

Best The Odd Woman and the City: A Memoir

Now you can Enjoy book The Odd Woman and the City: A Memoir with detailed description:

Product Description

A contentious, deeply moving ode to friendship, love, and urban life in the spirit of Fierce Attachments

A memoir of self-discovery and the dilemma of connection in our time, The Odd Woman and the City explores the rhythms, chance encounters, and ever-changing friendships of urban life that forge the sensibility of a fiercely independent woman who has lived out her conflicts, not her fantasies, in a city (New York) that has done the same. Running steadily through the book is Vivian Gornick's exchange of more than twenty years with Leonard, a gay man who is sophisticated about his own unhappiness, whose friendship has "shed more light on the mysterious nature of ordinary human relations than has any other intimacy" she has known. The exchange between Gornick and Leonard acts as a Greek chorus to the main action of the narrator's continual engagement on the street with grocers, derelicts, and doormen; people on the bus, cross-dressers on the corner, and acquaintances by the handful. In Leonard she sees herself reflected plain; out on the street she makes sense of what she sees.
Written as a narrative collage that includes meditative pieces on the making of a modern feminist, the role of the flaneur in urban literature, and the evolution of friendship over the past two centuries, The Odd Woman and the City beautifully bookends Gornick's acclaimed Fierce Attachments, in which we first encountered her rich relationship with the ultimate metropolis.

Now you can Read Book Ancient Teotihuacan: Early Urbanism in Central Mexico (Case Studies in Early Societies) with detailed description:

Product Description

This is the first comprehensive English-language book on the largest city in the Americas before the 1400s. Teotihuacan is a UNESCO world heritage site, located in highland central Mexico, about twenty-five miles from Mexico City, visited by millions of tourists every year. The book begins with Cuicuilco, a predecessor that arose around 400 BCE, then traces Teotihuacan from its founding in approximately 150 BCE to its collapse around 600 CE. It describes the city's immense pyramids and other elite structures. It also discusses the dwellings and daily lives of commoners, including men, women, and children, and the craft activities of artisans. George L. Cowgill discusses politics, economics, technology, art, religion, and possible reasons for Teotihuacan's rise and fall. Long before the Aztecs and 800 miles from Classic Maya centers, Teotihuacan was part of a broad Mesoamerican tradition but had a distinctive personality that invites comparison with other states and empires of the ancient world.

Best A History of Architecture (Classic Reprint)

Now you can Read A History of Architecture (Classic Reprint) with detailed description:

Product Description

A History of Architecture is the work of Fiske Kimball, an Assistant Professor of Architecture at The University of Michigan, and George Harold Edgell, an Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Harvard University. Kimball went on to become the Director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where he served for more than thirty years. There are few people more qualified to have written the history of architecture then these two.

A History of Architecture begins with an overview of the principles of architecture, which at their most simplistic are the need to provide an enclosed space from the elements. From this brief introduction the authors launch into a detailed analysis of architecture throughout history. Beginning with prehistoric and pre-classical architecture, the book analyzes the architectural principles of various peoples throughout history, from Greek and Roman, to Byzantine and Gothic, to Modern and American. This is a complete and thorough analysis of the history of architecture. Including more than 300 illustrations, the words of Edgell and Kimball are accompanied by pictures intended to further the reader's understanding of the subject.

As a history book, A History of Architecture is a massive success. The depth and breadth of this work are impressive. The writing is authoritative and concise, and the revelations uncovered in a people's architecture are eye opening. It feels very much like the authors have written the definitive work on architectural history, or at least one that will remain indispensible for at least one hundred more years.

This text is recommended for all history enthusiasts and anybody interested in architectural history.

This comprehensive and heavily illustrated volume, aimed at students and young professionals as well as general readers, explores the materials, classic texts, instruments, and theories that have propelled modern engineering, and the famous and not-so-famous buildings designed through the ages, from the Parthenon to Chartres Cathedral and the dome of St. Peter's, from eighteenth-century silk mills in England to the Crystal Palace, and on to the first Chicago high-rises, the Sydney Opera House, and the latest "green" skyscrapers. Incorporated within the continuous narrative are sidebars with short biographies of eminent engineers, excerpts from classic texts, stories of individual projects of major importance, and brief histories of key concepts such as calculus. Also included are extensive reference materials: appendices, a glossary, bibliography, and index.

As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

Product Description

The book presents a coherent description of distributed manufacturing, providing a solid base for further research on the subject as well as smart implementations in companies. It provides a guide for those researching and working in a range of fields, such as smart manufacturing, cloud computing, RFID tracking, distributed automation, cyber physical production and global design anywhere, manufacture anywhere solutions. Foundations & Principles of Distributed Manufacturing anticipates future advances in the fields of embedded systems, the Internet of Things and cyber physical systems, outlining how adopting these innovations could rapidly bring about improvements in key performance indicators, which could in turn generate competition pressure by rendering successful business models obsolete. In laying the groundwork for powerful theoretical models, high standards for the homogeneity and soundness of the suggested setups are applied. The book especially elaborates on the upcoming competition in online manufacturing operations and respective control procedures.

By outlining encapsulation and evolving decision-making principles, Foundations & Principles of Distributed Manufacturing fully conceptualizes the view of manufacturing networks as sets of loosely coupled interacting smart factory objects. Moreover, the book provides concrete approaches to a number of future fields, where distributed manufacturing might be applied. Both researchers and professionals will profit from the authors’ broad experience in Distributed Manufacturing and Fractal Enterprise implementations, where they initiated and completed a number of successful research projects: within the global Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS) scheme, within the European Research Area frameworks as well as national contexts, and both in industry and at leading research institutions. This background ensures well-founded theory on one hand and valuable practical results on the other in a fascinating area that is still under intensive research. Readers will acquire essential insights as well as useful guidance for categorizing and specifying extended distributed manufacturing solutions and their professional implementations.
