The key texts reprinted in this book are contributions from the Town and Country Planning Textbook (1950) which was published as an outcome for the Correspondence Course in Town Planning for members of the Allied Forces, which Tyrwhitt ran. In this bibliography Mr. Russell Sturgis and Mr. Henry E. Krehbiel place before readers, students, and librarians a thousand carefully chosen works on Fine Art, with descriptive, critical, and comparative notes. They thus enlarge five-fold their contributions to "The List of Books for Girls and Women and Their Clubs," published by the American Library Association in 1895. The notes here given incidentally offer many important canons of art criticism, and may well tempt readers to consecutive perusal. To librarians who wish to select books beyond the thousand here presented, the pages which follow contain valuable indication - as in setting forth he Avery catalogue, on p. 38. The competent and helpful appraisal of literature, how fairly begun by the American Library Association, it hopes to see extended in the near future. During 1897 it is expected that an appendix may be issued to "The Reader's Guide to Economic, Social, and Political Science," published by the Society for Political Education in 1891. Within a year or two there is promise that an annotated bibliography of American history may be taken in hand, and also a similar guide to the literature of certain important fields of applied science. In the fulness of time it may be possible thus to appraise every worthy book shortly after its publication; and, in addition to the issue of the notes in book-form, to distribute them on cards to follow title cards in the catalogue cases of public libraries and to be pasted in the books appraised. This plan would proffer guidance at the most effective points.

The numbers which follow the notes are those of the Dewey Classification.

The index is by Mrs. Mary E. Haines, of Brooklyn, N. Y.

Mr. Russell Sturgis pursued the study of architecture in an architect's office in New York, and for a year and a half in Europe. He practised his art from 1865 to 1878, during which time he designed many important buildings, including Battell Chapel, Farnam Hall, Durfee Hall, and Lawrance Hall of Yale College; the Homoeopathic Medical College and Flower Hospital, New York; the Mechanics' and Farmers' Bank at Albany; and churches, business buildings, and residences in New York, Albany, Aurora, Tarrytown, and Watertown, N. Y.; New Haven, Farmington, and Litchfield, Conn; Minneapolis and Louisville.

In 1878 Mr. Sturgis spent some months in France. In 1880 he retired from business on account of weak health and went to Europe. He resided abroad about five years, during which period he renewed his early studies, and spent much time in the important architectural centres and cities rich in collections of fine art.

For more than a century researchers have studied Maya ruins, and sites like Tikal, Palenque, Copán, and Chichén Itzá have shaped our understanding of the Maya. Yet cities of the eastern lowlands of Belize, an area that was home to a rich urban tradition that persisted and evolved for almost 2,000 years, are treated as peripheral to these great Classic period sites. The hot and humid climate and dense forests are inhospitable and make preservation of the ruins difficult, but this oft-ignored area reveals much about Maya urbanism and culture.

Using data collected from different sites throughout the lowlands, including the Vaca Plateau and the Belize River Valley, Brett Houk presents the first synthesis of these unique ruins and discusses methods for mapping and excavating them. Considering the sites through the analytical lenses of the built environment and ancient urban planning, Houk vividly reconstructs their political history, considers how they fit into the larger political landscape of the Classic Maya, and examines what they tell us about Maya city building.

The following account of architectural drawing and draughtsmen is intended mainly for students, and its object is to show that architectural draughtsmanship is not cut off from the family of Art, but that, in the hands of artists of genius, it has gone far, and takes a higher place than has usually been assigned it by artists and critics. As a matter of fact, not very much attention has been paid to this subject in England. William Burges read a paper on architectural drawing at the Royal Institute of British Architects in i 860; an excellent and well-illustrated paper was given there by Mr. Maurice B.Adams in 1885 ;and a book on architectural drawing, by Mr. R. Phene Spiers, himself an admirable draughtsman, appeared in 1887. Mr. Adams spaper is valuable for its account of English architectural draughtsmen of the last century; Mr. Spier's book for its very useful hints on the mecanique of drawing.

The standpoint from which the present work is written is different. I have endeavoured to extend the conception of draughtsmanship by including in my survey French and Italian draughtsmen, some of whom are very little known or studied in England, and incidentally to widen its range by including men who were designers almost as much as draughtsmen, such as the Lepautre, the Marot, and the French draughtsmen of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The tendency of students is to concentrate on the favourite manner of the time, and neglect any other.
