Product Description

John Ruskin (1819-1900) is best known for his work as an art critic and social critic, but is remembered as an author, poet and artist as well. Ruskin's essays on art and architecture were extremely influential in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Ruskin's range was vast. He wrote over 250 works which started from art history, but expanded to cover topics ranging over science, geology, ornithology, literary criticism, the environmental effects of pollution, and mythology. In 1848, he married Effie Gray, for whom he wrote the early fantasy novel The King of the Golden River. After his death Ruskin's works were collected together in a massive "library edition", completed in 1912 by his friends Edward Cook and Alexander Wedderburn. Its index is famously elaborate, attempting to articulate the complex interconnectedness of his thought. His other works include: Giotto and his works in Padua (1854), The Harbours of England (1856), "A Joy for Ever" (1857), The Ethics of the Dust (1866) and Hortus Inclusus.

Best Context: Architecture and the Genius of Place (Architectural Design Primer)

Now you can Read Context: Architecture and the Genius of Place (Architectural Design Primer) with detailed description:

Product Description

Demonstrates how a building's setting should inform and inspire rather than constrain architectural design

Context-Architecture and the Genius of Place is a highly engaging, informative discussion of context in architectural theory and practice. Eric Parry, one of the UK's most highly regarded architects — whose work has been widely lauded for its innovative response to its setting — addresses the contemporary definition of context and its importance for sustainable everyday living and urban design. Looking beyond the formal agenda to explore the fundamentals that give new social and cultural perspective to this vital point of departure for designers, this book turns the urban statistician's telescopic focus on global trends inside out for a better understanding of the cultural and physical conditions that make archetypes like the Parisian Café, the London High Street, the Baltic City Square, and the Mumbai Market part of the architect's lexicon. From pavement to landscape, readers will examine how context must be taken into account at every stage in the design process.

This book draws on the author's extensive experience within complex urban settings to show how the existing fabric and social conditions can provide an essential starting point for new design, offering a framework for thinking about design responses and their relationship to cultural origins of place.

  • Discover the importance of orientation
  • Develop a sequential understanding of urban space
  • Hear the dialogue between parts within a whole
  • Differentiate the uses of formal and informal

Whereas existing urban settings, particularly historic city centers, are generally regarded as limiting to architectural creativity, this book presents context as grounds for inspiration rather than constraint. When used correctly, these techniques create the feeling that a new building has always been there, simply because it "fits". Context explains the methods behind brilliant architecture, helping designers create buildings that not only belong, but can provide a catalyst to urban life.

Now you can Read Ancient Athens with detailed description:

Product Description

“What I would prefer is that you should fix your eyes every day on the greatness of Athens as she really is, and should fall in love with her. When you realize her greatness, then reflect that what made her great was men with a spirit of adventure, men who knew their duty, men who were ashamed to fall below a certain standard. If they ever failed in an enterprise, they made up their minds that at any rate the city should not find their courage lacking to her, and they gave to her the best contribution that they could.” – The Funeral Oration of Pericles, quoted by Thucydides Dominated to this day by the sprawling white marble complex of the Acropolis, Athens is a city which is immensely and rightly proud of its past. For a period of roughly three centuries, the polis of Athens stood, if not in a position of unchallenged supremacy among the cities of Hellas, then at the very least among its three most important polities. Its fledgling Empire, though small by the standards later set by Alexander or the Romans, or even by those of its ancient enemy Persia, nonetheless encompassed cities as far afield as Asia Minor and Southern Italy, a remarkable fact considering such expansion was achieved by the inhabitants of a single city and its immediate surroundings, rather than by an entire nation. For much of its history, the Athenian navy was the single mightiest force in the Mediterranean, having defeated the overwhelming might of Persia in pitched battle upon the open sea numerous times. The Athenian army itself, though subordinate to its naval power – a sop to the fact that it was trade and empire-building that had made Athens rich – was nothing to be sneered at, as it succeeded in meting out a humiliating defeat to Darius’s Persians at Marathon. Yet despite a martial tradition that, if taken as a whole, was second to none save the Spartans, Athens is chiefly remembered for two reasons: its political system, which would in time form the nucleus of all Western democratic systems of government, and the remarkable number of outstanding individuals which, during the Golden Age of Athens, lived and flourished in the enlightened city-state. The Ancient Athenians formed the backbone of the West’s entire culture, from the arts to philosophy and everything inbetween. In virtually all fields of human endeavor Athens was so much at the forefront of dynamism and innovation that the products of its most brilliant minds remain not only influential but entirely relevant to this day. In the field of medicine, the great physician Hippocrates not only advanced the practical knowledge of human anatomy and care-giving but changed the entire face of the medical profession. The great philosophers of Athens, men like Aristotle, Socrates, and Plato, literally revolutionized the way people thought about topics like logic, reason, and good and evil. Great architects and sculptors such as Phidias produced works of art of such breathtaking realism and startling dynamism that they later formed the driving force behind the resurgence of sculpture during the Renaissance and served as masters to artists such as Michelangelo, Bernini, and Donatello.

Best Book Access for All: A new paradigm for transportation planning based on principles of social justice

Now you can Access for All: A new paradigm for transportation planning based on principles of social justice with detailed description:

Product Description

Access for All aims to develop a new paradigm for transportation planning, based on principles of justice. The book starts from the observation that the principles underlying transportation planning have hardly changed over the past fifty years - in practice, as well as in theory, the focus has been on the performance of the transport system and ways to improve this performance. The goal has been to avoid congestion on the main road system and to achieve free flowing travel as much as possible, given budget restrictions.

On the fringes of mainstream practice and literature, some scholars and advocates have critically addressed the implicit distributive consequences of this approach and have shown who benefits from improvements in the transport system and who loses. This has resulted in calls for policy changes, to redress at least some of the inequities that have developed over time. Access for All aims to develop a new approach to transportation planning that takes distributional effects as its starting point.

Access for All builds on the extensive literature on disparities in mobility and accessibility, including the bodies of research on:

  • spatial mismatch
  • women and transport
  • urban service delivery
  • and the more recent body of literature on transport and social exclusion.

This book argues that a distributive approach to transport (or accessibility) is necessary to systematically address the social disparities found in these bodies of literature. In absence of an explicit distributive approach transport-related social exclusion is inevitable, as it is actually generated by current transportation planning practices.
